Position Overview

The Coded Welder position plays a crucial role within Anglo American’s engineering team. This individual will be responsible for performing welding tasks in alignment with specified procedures, ensuring high-quality execution in all aspects of steelwork repairs and maintenance.

  • Location: The selected candidates will be based at Rustenburg Base Metal Refiners in South Africa.
  • Number of Positions Available: Anglo American is seeking to fill two (2) Coded Welder positions.

Job Responsibilities

The Coded Welder will be responsible for executing various welding tasks, maintaining machinery, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. The key duties include:

Welding and Maintenance Tasks

  • Performing welding, maintenance, and steelwork repairs.
  • Operating an automatic welding machine.
  • Using and maintaining cutting, forming, measuring, and fastening tools.
  • Safely and efficiently handling power tools and cutting machines.
  • Ensuring all tools and materials are readily available for assigned shifts.
  • Conducting inspections to ensure machinery is functioning correctly.
  • Completing and signing off allocated work orders.
  • Executing all planned maintenance schedules accurately.

Metal Cutting and Welding Tasks

  • Cutting ferrous and non-ferrous materials using plasma arc cutters and oxy-fuel gas cutting processes.
  • Selecting materials based on project specifications.
  • Preparing and assembling welding equipment according to procedure.
  • Performing groove welds, flux core welding, shielded metal arc welding, and gas tungsten arc welding.
  • Conducting destructive testing on welded specimens.
  • Using various welding processes such as resistance arc welding and metal inert gas welding.
  • Repairing defective welds through arc air gouging and shield metal arc gouging.
  • Brazing metals using oxy-fuel gas welding.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Reporting operational problems and communicating plant defects to supervisors.
  • Providing technical support to team members and engineering staff.
  • Ensuring clear work expectations and safe working conditions for all employees.
  • Participating in improvement projects and identifying operational risks.

Maintenance Administration

  • Receiving daily and weekly work instructions from supervisors.
  • Prioritizing work orders and communicating resource requirements.
  • Completing job cards with detailed descriptions of work performed and materials used.
  • Assisting the Risk Officer in compiling safety reports.
  • Participating in safety and operational meetings.

Qualifications and Experience Required

Educational Requirements

  • A Matric certificate is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Must complete specific procedure training relevant to the appointed area.

Certification Requirements

  • Must be Certified Competent as a Coded Welder with expertise in CO2 and Argon welding.
  • Annual re-assessment for re-codification is required.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in boiler-making.
  • Strong knowledge of structural drawing interpretations and basic boiler-making.
  • Familiarity with materials of construction is advantageous.
  • A valid Code 08 driver’s license is required.
