Job Requirements
To be eligible for the Librarian position, applicants must meet the following essential qualifications and experience:
- Academic Qualifications: Candidates should hold a Bibl / B.Lis / B. Tech: LIS / B. Inf (Hons) or PGDip LIS, or an equivalent four-year post-matric qualification in Library and Information Science.
- Work Experience: At least 2 years of practical experience in a role related to library operations is required.
- Professional Registration: Applicants must be registered members of LIASA (Library and Information Association of South Africa).
- Additional Skills: A valid Code B driver’s license is required for the position. Candidates should be proficient in computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SLIMS, etc.). Proficiency in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape is essential.
Key Performance Areas
The Librarian will be responsible for overseeing several critical tasks at the Rosevalley Public Library. These tasks include:
- Supervising Subordinates: The Librarian will manage a team of library staff, ensuring smooth operations and effective teamwork.
- Library Services: The role involves assisting the public with the issuing and receiving of library materials, providing reference work and reading guidance, and ensuring the quality of the library’s offerings.
- Library Materials Management: The successful candidate will manage the selection, receiving, and checking of library materials from the regional library, as well as conducting weeding to return obsolete stock.
- Reporting & Administration: The Librarian will prepare monthly reports and statistics for the library manager and regional librarian. Administrative duties also include overseeing library programs and general management of the library.
Required Competencies
Candidates should demonstrate the following competencies:
- Core Professional Competencies: Strong written communication, organizational awareness, task management, and discipline-specific skills.
- Functional Competencies: Ability to compile general and supplementary valuations, manage the valuation roll, handle objections and appeals, manage projects, and oversee financial management.
- Public Service Competencies: Excellent interpersonal relationships, communication skills, and a service delivery orientation are critical.
