Mogale City Local Municipality, in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), has announced an exciting opportunity for young graduates eager to gain work experience in environmental conservation. The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) Youth Graduate Work Opportunities will offer 55 positions for a duration of five months, aiming to support youth between 18 and 35 years of age.
This programme focuses on graduates who have completed matric plus three years of study in fields such as Environment, Biodiversity, Conservation, Forestry, Air Quality, Landscaping, and Horticulture. It offers practical work experience and a chance to contribute to important environmental projects within the Mogale City area.
About the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP)
The EPWP is a government initiative aimed at reducing unemployment by providing work opportunities and skills development, particularly for youth. This programme offers valuable practical experience, allowing graduates to apply their academic knowledge in real-world environmental projects.

Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Matric plus three years of study in relevant environmental fields such as Environment, Biodiversity, Conservation, Forestry, Air Quality, Landscaping, and Horticulture.
- Youth aged between 18 and 35 years.
- South African citizenship with preference to Mogale City residents.
- Submission of an application letter, curriculum vitae, certified copies of qualifications, matric certificate, and ID document.
Roles and Responsibilities for Each Position
The 55 available positions are divided into specific roles to cover various aspects of environmental work:
- Education & Awareness (5 Positions)
Graduates will work on raising environmental awareness in communities through educational programmes and campaigns. - Climate Change (5 Positions)
Participants will help implement climate change mitigation and adaptation programmes aimed at reducing the municipality’s carbon footprint. - Environmental Compliance Promotion (5 Positions)
This role involves conducting field investigations, collecting data to enforce environmental regulations, and promoting sustainable practices within the community. - Landscaping (5 Positions)
Candidates will assist with:- Developing landscaping plans for identified areas.
- Creating a landscape masterplan for the municipality.
- Supporting the urban greening strategy.
- Administration and reporting duties.
- Designing public parks, gardens, and streetscapes.
- Contributing to landscape plans for new developments and urban renewal projects.
- Nature Conservation (5 Positions)
Responsibilities include identifying workplace hazards, ensuring a safe environment, collecting data for conservation efforts, and assessing biodiversity trends. - Urban Green (10 Positions)
Candidates will participate in tree planting, urban greening initiatives, and community beautification projects, including seasonal flower displays and community gardening. - Bylaw Enforcement (20 Positions)
The largest group of roles will involve:- Profiling illegal dumping hotspots.
- Capturing photographs of illegal dumping activities.
- Inspecting waste storage facilities.
- Conducting information sessions for reclaimers.
- Supporting recycling initiatives.
- Preparing and issuing bylaw enforcement notices and fines.
- Conducting inspections of buyback centres.
